The Phase Ist gas transmission pipeline has a total length of more than 400km, of which the main pipeline is 193.4km long, the branch pipeline is 178.3km long and the sub-branch pipeline is 28.3km long.

In total, 15 off-take stations and 24 valve rooms are situated along the whole gas transmission pipelines. The size of the pipelines ranges from 323.9 mm to 914 mm. The pressure of the NG pipelines varies from 3.8 to 9.2 Mpa. The pipeline network covers Shenzhen, Huizhou, Dongguan, Foshan and Guangzhou. Hong Kong Power plant users and city gas users have built their respective about 40 km long single pipeline and another about 92 km long seabed twin pipeline used for reception of NG from GDLNG Terminal.

CPPE (China Petroleum Pipeline Engineering Co. Ltd) is in charge of the engineering of the pipeline and off-take stations, while four companies, including CPPE(China Petroleum Pipeline Engineering Co. Ltd), SPPE(Sichuan Petroleum Pipeline Engineering Co. Ltd.), HPPE(Huabei Petroleum Pipeline Engineering Co. Ltd) and LPFE(Liaohe Petroleum Field Engineering Co. Ltd.) are responsible for its construction. For safety reasons, the trunkline route has been chosen to be as far away from densely populated areas and buildings as possible.

One of the main features of this construction project has been the challenge to successfully span 14 major rivers within the Pearl River network. The safe and environmentally friendly HDD crossing and shield tunneling technology has been adopted for the construction of the pipeline in order to protect river and marine ecology and vegetation, and to at the same time to minimize the impact on the natural landscape. The most challenging part of the Trunkline Project is the Qianwan sub-sea and Pearl River shield tunnelling where a shield tunnelling machine has been used to excavate tunnels under the sea or the river making way for the installation of the pipelines.

Construction of the Guangdong LNG Trunkline Project began in November 2004. In December, Pearl River shield tunneling started construction, and by January 2005, the installation of pipeline formally commenced.
